Skin Cancer Diagnostics and Surgery

Dr Abram Abdelsayed has a strong interest and passion in skin cancer diagnosis and management, both medical and surgical, including complex office-based surgical procedures.  He holds Certificates in Dermoscopy and Skin Cancer Surgery from the Skin Cancer College of Australasia (SCCA), as well as a Certificate in Basic and Advanced Surgical Skills (JCU)

Using a dermatoscope, your skin and any moles and lesions can be assessed, and if needed excisional biopsy performed on most locations.

Ear Micro Suction

You might require more than one visit to remove all the wax (with use of wax softeners for at least 3 days in between visits.)
Manual removal of wax using an instrument might be used to aid wax removal during the procedure.

Risks
The most common include discomfort and stimulation of the cough reflex.

Less common is trauma to the skin in the canal which can cause some light bleeding and/or infection.
Using olive oil ear drops for at least 3 days prior to the procedure can reduce the risk of trauma and soften the wax to ease removal and discomfort.

If you suffer with tinnitus, you might notice a temporary increased awareness of this which may last a few hours (mainly due to the suction noise of the machine.)
Some people have also reported a transient altered sensation with their hearing and feeling dizzy/lightheaded during and shortly after the procedure.

Very rarely perforation of the eardrum and permanent deterioration of tinnitus can happen.

Contraindications to micro suction
It is not suitable for those with an active ear infection (or recent infection a few weeks prior to procedure), a perforated eardrum and a history of ear surgery.
Caution is needed in people on blood thinners and those who have severe tinnitus or dizziness.

What to do after the procedure
Keep your ears dry for at least 24 hours to prevent introduction of bacteria thus reducing the risk of infection.
Avoid use of cotton swabs or fingers with sharp nails in the canal which can irritate/damage the skin.
Monitor for signs of complication or infection such as fever, pain, discharge or swelling. Seek medical advice if you develop any of these.
